Ross Patel - Director of Evidence

Mr Patel is a forensic consultant listed on the ‘UK Register of Expert Witnesses’ (Law Society / Sweet & Maxwell) and vetted member of the ‘Expert Witness Institute’ (EWI) and ‘Academy of Experts’ (AoE), specialising in the analysis of computing and data storage evidence.

An independent expert, with a higher duty to the Court, he produces expert reports for both the defence and prosecution and is regularly instructed in the most serious criminal matters on the circuit; R v KELAY (terrorism), R v MERCER & ORS (Rhys Jones Murder), R v WALLACE (NUNES cash in transit robberies), AG v CURTIS WARREN (drug importation), HMRC v CHAHAL & ORS (missing trader intra-community fraud), R v ADDERLEY (intercepted communications), OINK Peer-to-Peer criminal trial, R v COUCHMAN (murder & cell site analysis), R v AKMAL (multi-million pound fraud), R v JOYCE (Gooch Street Gang), R v COLIN GUNN (Nottingham Gang leader convicted of double murder).

Mr Patel has completed Home Office approved ‘Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act’ (RIPA) ‘Designated Person/Investigator’ training and is experienced in undertaking comprehensive investigations on a wide range of digital devices including; CCTV recordings, SATELLITE NAVIGATION systems, MOBILE PHONE handsets, COMPUTER systems and ELECTRONIC recording devices in compliance with the ‘Association of Chief Police Officer Guidelines’ (ACPO).

Mr Patel is the inventor of the CELL ANALYST; a revolutionary toolkit for telecommunication investigations across GSM/UMTS infrastructures, as used by a number of leading analysts throughout the UK and Europe for advanced cell site analysis investigations, surveys and mapping. These tools are utilised by over 600 Police forces and researchers around the world.

Mr Patel also dedicates a substantial amount of time to providing pro-bono assistance to appeals; notable cases include: R v STEELE (Rettendon Range Rover Murders and inspiration for the movie ‘Essex Boys’), R v TERRY SMITH (crime presenter/author convicted of armed robbery) and R v HALL (murder appeal), and R v BARRY GEORGE (acquitted of murder of BBC presenter; Jill Dando.

Mr Patel is also a regular contributor to a number of expert editorials and publications including ‘The Guardian’ newspaper, ‘Your Witness’, ‘The Barrister’, the ‘Digital Evidence Journal’, various Chamber of Commerce journals, ‘CrimeLine Newsletter’, and the journal of the ‘British Computer Society’.

Vocational qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) degree in Business Computing and peer examination as a ‘Certified Information Systems Security Professional’ (CISSP), ‘Certified Information Security Auditor’ (CISA), ‘Certified Ethical Hacker’ (CEH), ‘Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator’ (CHFI), ‘Certified Information Forensic Investigator’ (CIFI) and ‘Convergence Technologies Professional’ (CTP, Telecommunications). By examination he also qualified as a ‘Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer’ (MCSE), ‘Microsoft Certified Systems Analyst’ (MCSA), ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ (MCP), ‘CISCO Cert Network Associate’ (CCNA) and a ‘Certified Information Security Manager’ (CISM).

Mr Patel is a representative on the prestigious Home Office ‘Internet Crime Forum’ (ICF) and former member of Executive Council at the ‘British Academy of Forensic Science’ (BAFS)
